United to lose Ferdinand another six weeks

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Rio Ferdinand is unlikely to be back from injury until the beginning of September.
Ferdinand, who was named England captain in February, is recovering from a knee injury that caused him to miss the World Cup in South Africa and will now miss the start of the Premier League season as well.
Ferguson said: ''Rio should be six weeks [ from returning], I think. It was a ligament injury after all. You have to be careful with that.''
Ferdinand wrote on his Twitter page that he would be "playing again" in six weeks and said he was starting rehab. "We put dates on these injury comebacks but sometimes the goalposts move a bit, as in this case," he said.
The United boss also claimed that he believes he did the right thing by drafting in Chris Smalling, despite his lack of top-flight experience, in light of Ferdinand's problems and the uncertainty over Nemanja Vidic's future.
'We did not know that Rio was going to get the injury,'' he said. ''But we were still working with the complete conviction that (Vidic) was going to sign anyway long before the World Cup started.
''We prepared some months ago by signing Smalling if eventually should we have injuries in the department. Last season we did not do our chances in the league a lot of good by the number of injuries we had to defenders. So we felt we should stock up in that department. It has turned out to be pretty important.''
