Indian businessman Ahsan Ali Syed wants to sign David Beckham as part of a nine-figure spending spree if his proposed takeover of Blackburn is successful.
Rovers are in discussions with Syed, 36, over a proposed £300 million takeover with the Bahrain-based lawyer pledging an initial £80-100 million for new players. Syed believes the 35-year-old Beckham, who has not played for an English club since he left Manchester United seven years ago, is a high-profile name to fit his lofty ambitions.
"I was 26 when I started following the Premier League. I used to like Blackburn back then and also used to follow Manchester United's fortunes because of David Beckham,'' he told the Daily Mail. "If my finances allow and his intentions are positive then I would love to take Beckham.''
Roberto Mancini has hit back at Sir Alex Ferguson's criticisms of Manchester City's "kamikaze" spending by insisting that Manchester United have employed the same transfer strategy in the past.
Mancini used the unveiling of £24 million James Milner - a protracted signing that took City's summer spending to well in excess of £100 million - to dismiss Ferguson's thinly-veiled barb.
"I think all the other teams have spent a lot of money in the past," Mancini said. "I don't mean 15 years ago but in the last one, two three years. It is not important for me [what Ferguson says]. But I repeat that Manchester United, like Manchester City, have spent a lot of money in the past."
England international Milner did nothing to ease the pressure on Mancini by declaring that he has joined his new club from Aston Villa in order to win the Premier League title. The winger, whose player-plus-cash transfer saw Stephen Ireland move in the opposite direction, revealed that the decision to make the switch to City was a straightforward one.
Blackburn have denied agreeing a deal with Litex Lovech striker Ivelin Popov.
A statement on the Litex Lovech website earlier on Thursday suggested that the transfer was sealed but for the player's work permit, but that does not appear to be the case.
Rovers chairman John Williams said: "He is one of a number of strikers currently under consideration. We have not made an offer to his club."
Popov, 22, has around a one in three strike-rate for the club and is also a Bulgarian international, for whom he has bagged three goals in 16 games. It was reported that had impressed while on trial at Ewood Park, persuading manager Sam Allardyce to offering him a deal.
The Litex statement read: ''Negotiations have been completed between the club, Blackburn and Ivelin Popov. All three parties are satisfied with the arrangements. Ivelin Popov will be back in Bulgaria on Thursday to collect their luggage and to submit documents for a British work visa and next week will join Blackburn.''
