La Liga Preview Matchday 9: 5 key games
October 30th 2010 09:28
As we enter the ninth matchday in the La Liga alot of questions will be answered. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Villarreal had pulled away a little from the rest of the pack and with only Barcelona having a tough test on the day the could pull further ahead.
1. The first key match to me is Valencia at Real Zaragaza. Zaragaza is terrible with only 3 points and is destined to be regulated at the end of the year but we see games like this every week where a team should win easily and then the go on the road and get upset. Valencia needs 3 points out of this match anything else is a disappointment. With 16 points Valencia has to stay with the top 3. This game is played on Saturday.
2. Barcelona @ Sevilla FC is easily the best game involving two teams in the top half of the table standings. Sevilla FC needs this win to put itself it better position for the long haul of competing for the title. Barcelona needs this win not fall behind by 4 to Real Madrid who should win easily. Messi will need to take control of this game earlier for Barcelona. This game is played on Saturday.
3. Athletic Bilbao @ Getafe is a mid level match that both teams need in the worst way to save their season. Bilbao at 10 and Getafe at 13 points their is no room for error when trying to keep pace with the big boys. Getafe is a well balanced scoring team while Bilbao needs Llorente to be at the top of his game. Neither team can afford to leave this Sunday matchup without some points.
4. Atletico Madrid @ Almeria is a season breaker for Madrid if the lose. Having by all accounts a decent start but them to get back to 07-08/08-09 form the need to take three points hear and set a statement with the win. Diego Forlan needs to have a breakout game here with atleast two goals to put the rest of the league on noticed that Atletico Madrid is for real. Almeria is just playing to get away from the bottom of the league table and avoid regulation. Match is played on Sunday.
5. Monday night game is Mallorca @ Levante. This matchup is very interesting to me. Levante is trying to stay in the top league and has 8 points but with a win could easily put themselves in the middle of the pack and start the process of ensuring the stay in La Liga. Mallorca has 11 points and unless something magical happens can forget UEFA Champions glory but the easily start the climb to UEFA Europa league qualifying.
My predictions for the weekend:
Saturday
Valencia 2-0 Real Zaragoza
Real Madrid 3-1 Hercules
Sevilla FC 1-1 Barcelona
Espanyol 3-1 Deportivo La Coruna
Real Sociedad 2-1 Malaga
Osasuna 1-1 Racing Santander
Villarreal 3-0 Sorting Gijon
Atletico Madrid 3-1 Almeria
Getafe 3-2 Athletic Bilbao
Mallorca 2-1 Levante
