Cristiano Ronaldo's United future in doubt
May 2nd 2008 17:27
Cristiano Ronaldo has hesitated to declare his intentions for seasons to come, saying that he would decide his future with the club, or potentially away from it, during the summer. This ambiguous news is all that was needed for the management at Real Madrid to redeclare their desire for the quick-footed Portuguese star yesterday.
According to Spanish sports rag AS, Real Madrid are committed and hopeful regarding the idea of bringing Ronaldo to the club. For a club that's been bleeding star players over the past few seasons, Cristiano Ronaldo would signal a return to the talented, yet expensive, tastes the club showed at the beginning of the decade.
Surely if any club has the resources and the title prospects to pry Cristiano Ronaldo out of Manchester United's hands, it is Real Madrid. It's possible that with Champions League and Premiership titles in his pocket, the youngster may decide he's done all he can with the club. On the other hand, falling short of either of these goals may be enough to send him looking for a squad that can help him get the trophies that seem to motivate every stepover.
As has been the case when dealing with Manchester United stars in the past, Sir Alex Ferguson will have a lot to say about it one way or the other. Manchester United's manager has a history of letting his best players go, much to the chagrin of fans. If Cristiano Ronaldo isn't quick to commit to the squad after the end of the season, he may find that the Scotsman has put him up for sale whether he likes it or not.
