Crawley Town defeated AFC Wimbledon 3-2 to kick off Carling Cup

August 2nd 2011 14:56

On July 29th the new Carling Cup season kicked off. In the only action of the preliminary round Crawley Town came back from one goal down on two occasions to defeat AFC Wimbledon 3-2. Crawley Town will now advance to the first round on Aug 9. They will travel to play Crystal Palace.
Luke Moore scored in the 26th minute to give Wimbledon the early lead but Hope Akpan erased that 11 mins later. Jack Midson put Wimbledon back up one minute into the second half but Crawley answered with goals by Sergio Torres and Matthew Tubbs to advance to the next round.

The Football League Cup, commonly known as the League Cup or, from current sponsorship, the Carling Cup, is an English football competition. Like the FA Cup, it is played on a knockout (single elimination) basis. Unlike the FA Cup only 92 clubs can enter—the 20 clubs of the Premier League, and the 72 clubs of The Football League, which organizes the competition.
Although the League Cup is one of the three major domestic trophies attainable by English league teams, it is perceived by some larger clubs as a lower priority than the league championship and the FA Cup. Arguably, it reached a low point over the turn of the millennium when it was commonly nicknamed the "Worthless Cup" or the "Mickey Mouse Cup". Some clubs have made a point of fielding a weaker side in the competition, making the opportunity for giant-killing of the larger clubs more likely. Many of the top English sides, Arsenal and Manchester United in particular, have used the competition to give young players valuable big-game experience.

Over Three days from Aug 9 thru Aug 11 35 matches will take place in the first round. The Second round will take part the week of Aug 22.

Yeah, you can tell that the larger clubs don't really care about the Carling Cup. They'll play their worst players in the first couple of rounds. The only time they will ever be serious is during the later stages of the competition. Still, it is a tournament nonethless and is valuable for the smaller teams in England. Good post.
