A look Back 1971-1972 UEFA Cup(Europa League)

December 16th 2010 19:11

In 1971 the UEFA Cup was born. 64 teams who did not qualify for the European Cup or UEFA Cup Winners' Cup participated.

The First round saw 32 matches of head to head aggregate scoring.

The second round was drawn the same way as 16 matches of head to head aggregate scoring.

In the first two rounds teams could not be drawn against another team from the same Nation.

In the Third Round teams still could not be matched up verse another team from their Nation. Eight matches of aggregate scoring made up this round.

The Quarterfinals pitted;

Milan vs Lierse
Arad vs Tottenham Hotspur
Ferencvaros vs Zeljeznicar
Juventus vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

Milan would win 3-1 on Aggregate, Tottenham would advance 3-1 on aggregate, Wolverhampton would win by a 3-2 aggregate score. Ferencvaros would advance on Penalty kicks after drawing with Zeljeznicar 3-3.

Tottenham drew Milan in the semifinals. would win 2-1 in the first leg and draw the second leg 1-1 to advance to the final.

Wolverhampton and Ferencvaros drew in the first leg 2-2 but a 2-1 win in leg two gave the victory to Wolverhampton.

So, in the first final of the UEFA Cup it was two England clubs in Tottenham vs Wolverhampton.

Tottenham would take the first leg 2-1 and earn a draw in the second leg to grab the title 3-2 on Aggregate.

A little over 54,000 fans saw the final in London while about 38000 saw the first leg in Wolverhampton.

Great investigative work, would like you to keep doing these, building up to more recent years?

I was very lucky to find some coverage of the final.

I love looking back on the History of these Tourneys.

I am looking at doing a 12 part History on the EPL.

The days of way too short pants saw the Toffees win. Boy do things change. Nowadays, Wolverhampton would never make the UEFAs. As for Arad, Ferencvaros, and Zeljeznicar those guys wouldn never come close. I never call the UEFA cup the Europa League.

Back in 1972 their was three big European Tournaments.

The European Cup(Today called the Champions League) which AJAX won over Inter Milan

The UEFA Cup(Today called the Europa League) which Tottenham won over Wolverhampton

The UEFA Winners Cup(Today no longer played was asbored by the previous two.) Rangers FC beat Dynamo Moscow.

The names have changed so much over the years that its hard to keep them straight. Back in 71-72 the Winners Cup was the second most sought after trophy but once the UEFA took control of the other cups things changed.
